Father shots daughter

A man accidentally shots his 6yr old daughter while he was cleaning a gun. He claimed that he unintentionally pull the trigger. The man, Richard Peters, called 911 after the shooting, and was arrested with first degree manslaughter charge. Peters told detectives he was drinking alcohol when the incident happened.

I don’t understand how you could unintentionally pull the trigger. And why did Peter’s not check to see if the gun was loaded before cleaning it. This would have prevented this accident.
